Jervis McEntee Diaries

Sunday November 18, 1877

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, November 18, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Yesterday I tried to paint the sky opposite the sun I saw on our ride on Friday but I have not got it strong enough. Last night in the middle of the night we had a thunder shower with vivid lightning. The weather has been remarkably warm for a long time. Today the wind is in the N.W. and I think it will be colder. Clouds are forming, the wind blows and the air is full of the last flying leaves. The landscape along Hussey Hill of which I never tire is rich and solemn and the deep indigo of the second range comes up strong against the flashes of white in the sky. I am full of a longing to express something for which my hand seems too feeble. Wrote to Lucy.
