Open daily 11:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
As a public health precaution due to COVID-19, all Smithsonian museums, including the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery, are closed temporarily beginning November 23, 2020. We are not announcing a reopening date at this time and will provide updates on our websites and social media.
Open daily 11:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
The gallery can be found on the first floor of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture in D.C.’s Penn Quarter neighborhood—also home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery—through the doorway off the Courtyard Café.
In the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery, the Archives presents informative exhibitions highlighting some of its more than 20 million items documenting the history of visual arts in America.
The gallery was named in honor of Lawrence A. Fleischman, who with E.P. Richardson founded the Archives of American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1954.
The Archives’ exhibition program is made possible through a generous endowment from Barbara G. Fleischman.
Through collecting, preserving, and providing access to our collections, the Archives inspires new ways of interpreting the visual arts in America and allows current and future generations to piece together the nation’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.
