The Fall 2020 issue of the Archives of American Art Journal (vol. 59, no. 2) foregrounds how the Archives can support innovative arguments about the performance of gender and sexuality. The issue also includes an essay that mines the recently acquired papers of Chiura Obata, shedding new light on the relationship between the artist's visual production and the US government's incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. New York-based painter Josh Dorman transforms a seemingly innocuous watercolor by Charles Burchfield (1893-1967) in the collection into a poetic meditation on loss, longing, and regeneration.
