The gallery can be found on the first floor of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture in D.C.’s Penn Quarter neighborhood—also home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery—through the doorway off the Courtyard Café.
In the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery, the Archives presents informative exhibitions highlighting some of its more than 20 million items documenting the history of visual arts in America.
The gallery was named in honor of Lawrence A. Fleischman, who with E.P. Richardson founded the Archives of American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1954.
The Archives’ exhibition program is made possible through a generous endowment from Barbara G. Fleischman.
Original material can be consulted by appointment in our Washington, D.C. Headquarters.
Copies of unrestricted microfilm materials can be obtained through one of our affiliated research centers.
