Series 2: Correspondence , 1931-2007
1.2 Linear feet
Boxes 1-2

The Yasuo Kuniyoshi correspondence coverss various topics including exhibits and his status as a Japanese American during World War II. Additionally there are letters sent to Kuniyoshi by Sheldon School students about his career as an artist and his letters in reply, and letters of recommendation he compiled to vouch for his character and work as an artist, in case he needed them during his 1941 travels around the United States.
The bulk of this series consists of correspondence to Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi after Yasuo's death including letters of condolence and letters requesting the inclusion of his work in exhibits and publications. Of note is her correspondence with Karl Fortess, Alexander Brook, Ritsuko Ozawa, Tom Wolf, and the Yasuo Kuniyoshi Museum in Japan. Researchers should note that additional correspondence may be found in Series 5: Professional and Gallery Records.
This series is divided into two groups: Yasuo Kuniyoshi correspondence and Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi correspondence. Correspondence with Yasuo Kuniyoshi comes first, starting with letters from the artist to his second wife Sara, letters of recommendation for Kuniyoshi to travel during World War II, and letters between Kuniyoshi and some school children. The rest of the Yasuo Kuniyoshi correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. The correspondence with Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi follows the Yasuo Kuniyoshi correspondence, and is also arranged alphabetically.
The bulk of the material in this series has been digitized, except for duplicates.

Series 6: Exhibition Files , 1948-2004
1.1 Linear feet
Boxes 5-6, OVs 19-20

Exhibition files include some material on exhibitions while Yasuo Kuniyoshi was alive, but most of the series consists of files created by Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi about exhibitions of Kuniyoshi's works after his death in 1953. Files may include exhibition checklists and planning documents, loan agreements, correspondence, photographs of the exhibition, and press materials.
Files are arranged chronologically by year of exhibition. Researchers should note that additional exhibition records may be found within Series 7: Printed Material.
The bulk of this series has been digitized. Materials which have not been digitized include blank pages, blank versos of photographs, and duplicates. In some cases, exhibition catalogs and other publications have had their covers, title pages, and relevant pages digitized.

Series 7: Printed Material , 1921-2013
2.1 Linear feet
Boxes 6-8, 14, OV 20

Found here are books, newspaper, and magazine clippings about Kuniyoshi and about World War II; exhibition catalogs and announcements; magazines; and miscellaneous event announcements, brochures, and bulletins. Researchers should note that additional printed material can be found within Series 8: Scrapbooks.
Printed materials are grouped together by type - such as books, clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, and magazines - and arranged chronologically within those groupings. The books, which are arranged alphabetically by title, are the exception.
The bulk of this series has been digitized. Materials which have not been digitized include blank pages, blank versos of photographs, and duplicates. A few of the shorter exhibition catalogs before 1945 have been digitized but, in most cases, exhibition catalogs and other publications have only had their covers, title pages, and relevant pages digitized.

Series 8: Scrapbooks , 1919-1978
0.6 Linear feet
Boxes 8, 13, 15

Four scrapbooks include press clippings, exhibition announcements, checklists, and a few catalogs. Three of the scrapbooks appear to have been compiled in chronological order from 1919 to 1951. The fourth scrapbook, which has been unbound, appears to have been created at a later date by Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi.
The three chronologically arranged scrapbooks are at the beginning of the series, followed by the fourth scrapbook which is believed to have been created by Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi at a later date.
The bulk of this series has been digitized. In some cases, exhibition catalogs and other publications have had their covers, title pages, and relevant pages digitized.

Series 9: Artwork , circa 1925-1991
0.8 Linear feet
Boxes 8, 14, 16, OVs 21-23

Artwork consists of etchings, numerous sketches and drawings in graphite and ink, sketches painted onto clear acetate which Kuniyoshi used for catalogs, two zinc lithographic plates and their corresponding lithographic prints, and a sketchbook. Some of the drawings that Yasuo Kuniyoshi created for the Office of War Information during World War II are in this series. Also found are Christmas cards designed by Kuniyoshi. There is one folder of pencil sketches by unidentified artists.
The artwork is loosely grouped together by medium - etchings, graphite sketches and drawings, ink sketches and drawings, lithographic plates, etc. Most of the artwork is undated, so they have been given a broad date range.
The bulk of this series has been digitized. Materials which have not been digitized include blank pages of the sketchbook and the two zinc lithographic plates and their corresponding prints.
