Summary: A diary, May 25-July 23, 1905, written by Van Raalte while enroute to Holland and during her first months living there; a sketchbook; and two photographs, one of Van Raalte and one of her uncle Martin Van Raalte who accompanied her on her travels.
Biographical/Historical Note
Painter. Born in St. Louis, Mo., Van Raalte traveled to Holland in 1905 to study oil painting with Fritz Mondrian, the first teacher of Piet Mondrian, his nephew.
Provenance
Donated 1983 by Jeanette Dorsey, Van Raalte's daughter, through Mary Anne Goley, curator of the Arts Program at the Federal Reserve System. Goley obtained the material while curating the exhibition "The Hague School and its American Legacy."
