This record forms part of the Chicago’s Art-Related Archival Materials: A Terra Foundation Resource project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. For this project, the Archives surveyed archival repositories throughout the Chicago region to identify art-related materials contained in their holdings. While the Archives of American Art does not own any of the materials described herein, information about those materials and links to the original repositories have been included when available.

Descriptive Summary

2 record boxes, 1 archival box, and 2 scrapbooks of material consisting of the records of the Wilmette Historical Commission, created to gather material documenting the history of Wilmette, Illinois. Included are a scrapbook of clippings including those relating to the 1949 Charter Day Celebration, in which local artists were involved; a scrapbook of lithographs by various local artists of subjects from Wilmette history; and a folder of other items relating to the Charter Day Celebration.

Biographical Historical Note

In 1949, the Wilmette Historical Commission of Wilmette, Illinois, organized a Charter Day Celebration for the town, for which local artists contributed art depicting local scenes and events. Under the direction of artist and teacher Marian Witt, several artists created lithographs of Wilmette historical subjects specifically for the occasion.
