This record forms part of the Chicago’s Art-Related Archival Materials: A Terra Foundation Resource project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. For this project, the Archives surveyed archival repositories throughout the Chicago region to identify art-related materials contained in their holdings. While the Archives of American Art does not own any of the materials described herein, information about those materials and links to the original repositories have been included when available.

Descriptive Summary

1.0 linear foot of materials consisting of personal correspondence, photographs, greeting cards, clippings, brochures, advertisements, and an audio cassette tape, as well as items from institutions affiliated with Allen Porter. Materials related to the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA), Institute of Design, Society of Typographic Arts, and the University of Illinois at Chicago include course outlines, minutes, reports, sketches, and clippings. These papers also include booklets, fliers, and postage stamps that commemorate the Bauhaus movement.

Biographical Historical Note

Allen Porter is a prominent graphic designer, photographer, teacher, and former student of the New Bauhaus/Institute of Design in Chicago. Porter has designed exhibitions, marketing communications, packaging, corporate presentations, and helped to construct new corporate identities. His work has been exhibited at the Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York and the Robert Henry Adams Fine Arts Gallery in Chicago.
