American Mural Painting scrapbooks

This record forms part of the Chicago’s Art-Related Archival Materials: A Terra Foundation Resource project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. For this project, the Archives surveyed archival repositories throughout the Chicago region to identify art-related materials contained in their holdings. While the Archives of American Art does not own any of the materials described herein, information about those materials and links to the original repositories have been included when available.

Descriptive Summary

.5 linear foot (1 box) of material consisting of 7 scrapbooks containing newspaper and magazine clippings relating to mural paintings or painters active throughout the United States. The clippings date from 1934-1944 and are from publications from across the country. The first three books include indexes to artists’ names.

Biographical Historical Note

In the 1930s and 1940s, the staff of the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, Art Institute of Chicago, collected clippings from various publications documenting the work of multiple mural artists working throughout the United States.
