Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital records and Deering Family papers
This record forms part of the Chicago’s Art-Related Archival Materials: A Terra Foundation Resource project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. For this project, the Archives surveyed archival repositories throughout the Chicago region to identify art-related materials contained in their holdings. While the Archives of American Art does not own any of the materials described herein, information about those materials and links to the original repositories have been included when available.
2 Hollinger boxes; primarily correspondence between William Deering and Wesley Hospital President Perley Lowe and Deering’s sons. The collection includes information regarding portraits of William and Abby Deering Howe by Arvid Nyholm, a marble medallion by Andrew O’Connor, and a portrait of James Deering by Walter McEwen.
Biographical Historical Note
William Deering and his sons were noted American business leaders, philanthropists, art and civic patrons. Members of the Deering family have long been associated with Northwestern University and Wesley Memorial Hospital as major donors and trustees.Arvid Nyhold was a Swedish American painter of portraits and figural works. Andrew O’Connor was an Irish American sculptor. Walter McEwen was an American expatriate painter known for his scenes of Dutch peasant life and for portraits.
