The Newberry Library is a major independent research library dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge, especially in the humanities, and open free to the public since its founding in 1887. Its Special Collections include several American art- and design-related archival collections, with an emphasis on local artists, organizations, and collectors. The John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing Collection contains materials on the history of printing, calligraphy, illustration, and other graphic design fields. Finding aids for many collections are available online. Some records in this web resource were compiled from print-only inventories and from in-person examination of materials.
