This record forms part of the Chicago’s Art-Related Archival Materials: A Terra Foundation Resource project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. Ernst Detterer Papers, 1907-1931 (4 cubic ft.) focuses on Detterer's career before he came to the Newberry Library, and includes notes, memorabilia, correspondence, drawings, sketches, and a few finished art works, including some by his Art Institute students. Inventory available on site.

Biographical Historical Note

Ernst F. Detterer was a designer and calligrapher who was founding head of the Department of Printing Arts of the School of the Art Institute and Custodian of the John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing at the Newberry Library, 1931-1947.
