This record forms part of the Chicago’s Art-Related Archival Materials: A Terra Foundation Resource project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. For this project, the Archives surveyed archival repositories throughout the Chicago region to identify art-related materials contained in their holdings. While the Archives of American Art does not own any of the materials described herein, information about those materials and links to the original repositories have been included when available.

Descriptive Summary

Collection of lantern slides and typographic samples from the collection of Eugene Dana, artist and faculty member at the Chicago's Institute of Design (ID) and University of Illinois at Chicago, primarily lantern slides used by ID for study and teaching (1938–1963), and slides created as part of design projects (1948–1949). Also included are slides of classical sculpture used in production of the film Boxing Tonight (1949), edited and produced by Dana and Charles Lichtenstein. Two small groups of slides represent respectively the photography of Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan. Typographic samples include announcements and invitations designed by Frank Barr, who taught typography and supervised the printing workshop at ID (ca. 1950–1955). Miscellaneous announcements and catalogs relating to the ID are generally student designs.

Biographical Historical Note

Eugene Dana was an educator, painter, designer, and filmmaker. From 1947 to 1963 he was a professor at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, teaching graphic design among other subjects. He taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1966 to 1985.

The Institute of Design began in Chicago in 1937 as the New Bauhaus; closed in 1938; reopened in 1939 as the Chicago School of Design; changed name in 1944 to the Institute of Design; and became affiliated with the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1949.
