Declan Haun Papers (13 linear feet) consists of family and personal correspondence of photojournalist Declan Haun as well as notes and reflections (mid-1960s); small notebooks (58 volumes) of assignments, lists, etc. (1960-1990); date book calendars (1967-1983); examples of Haun's published photo essays; items on educational activities in which he participated; manuscript by Richard Bradford about Gary, Indiana, that was to be illustrated with Haun's photographs if published; clippings and brochures compiled by Haun as reference file; files relating to Haun's work for National Geographic magazine (1977-1980s) and his contributions to the Odyssey exhibition celebrating the magazine's 100th anniversary; plans for a photography magazine of his own; and other papers.
Declan Haun Collection of Visual Materials (more than 4,800 photographic prints, 105,000 negatives, 44,000 transparencies, 4 moving picture film reels, and 1 videotape) consists of the major images made by photojournalist Declan Haun, including photographs made while working for the Charlotte Observer (1958-1963); and as freelancer for the Black Star agency (1963-1994), the bulk in 1963-1976 while he resided in Chicago; items made for magazines, such as Life, Newsweek, and Saturday Evening Post; for advertising firms, trade journals and annual reports for corporations; and images by Haun while illustrations editor for National Geographic (1976-1982) and Smithsonian Magazine (1982-1984).
