Correspondence is primarily personal with the bulk of the series comprising correspondence between Shirley and Leonard Gorelick. Also found is professional correspondence providing scattered documentation of Gorelick's career from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s.

The series is arranged as two subseries.

Personal Correspondence, 1939-1946

Gorelick's correspondence with Leonard Gorelick begins right after the couple's April 1944 marriage and documents their relationship through weekly or more frequent exchanges written during the time Leonard Gorelick was posted in Florida and elsewhere while serving in the military at the end of World War II. Their letters include lively discussions of a wide variety of topics including Gorelick's teaching jobs and college experiences, the difficulties of a long-distance relationship, setting up their home, friends, politics, and the racial and antisemitic bigotry Leonard Gorelick witnessed, experienced, and challenged, during his time in the military.

Other personal correspondence is primarily written to the Gorelicks by friends and family members, with one letter written by Shirley Gorelick to friend Albert Floyd.

Professional Correspondence, 1954-1994

Gorelick's professional correspondence is from a variety of museums and other institutions, including community art organizations in Long Island, and relates primarily to exhibitions, loans, occasional sales, and consignments. General correspondence includes a photo of Gorelick with Larry Rivers, Ann Orling, and Ina Friedman related to a North Shore Community Arts Center, Long Island, event in 1965.

Of additional note is a file for Lawrence Alloway, containing 4 exchanges between Alloway and Gorelick, as well as material relating to reviews Alloway wrote of Gorelick's work.
