Senga Nengudi papers, 1947, circa 1962-2017

Included in the biographical material series are education records; family records including "Sanza and Oji's Book" and material documenting Senga Nengudi's name change from Sue Irons; the kimono Nengudi wore to wed Ellioutt Fittz; certificates; interview transcripts; and address books.

This series consists of wall calendars, planners, organizers, and journals in which Senga Nengudi chronicled her appointments, to do lists, thoughts, and artistic practice. Some notebooks are decorated with collages and include sketches or other artwork.

This series consists of both personal and professional correspondence with family, friends, galleries and institutions, and other artists. Of note are letters between Senga Nengudi (then Sue Irons) and her mother while Nengudi was studying in Japan. Other notable correspondents include Maren Hassinger, David Hammons, Jill Crane, and Cheryl Banks.

This series consists of writings by Senga Nengudi and others. Writings by Nengudi include academic papers, as well as wedding planning notes and artist statements, including one for Propecia Leigh, one of Nengudi's personas. Other writings are by Maren Hassinger, Kellie Jones, Joan Kleihauer, and others.

Nengudi's writings in this series are arranged chronologically. The writings by others are arranged alphabetically by author.

Included in the professional activities series are class evaluations and materials related to dance and movement workshops Nengudi taught; gallery files; and files related to exhibitions, projects, and performances. These files may include correspondence, printed material, budget and financial information, contracts and agreements, planning notes, photographic material, and born-digital and audiovisual material. Also included is a dress worn by Maren Hassinger in a performance piece choreographed by Senga Nengudi.

This series is arranged chronologically. Material related to other artists appears at the end of the series and is arranged alphabetically by artist.

This series includes exhibition and event announcements, catalogs, and programs; clippings; flyers and posters; newsletters; magazines; press releases; postcards and collected images; maps; and a variety of published material, including born-digital exhibition catalogue materials.

The scrapbook in this collection includes photographs of Senga Nengudi and her artwork, as well as a newspaper clipping, performance program, and flyer. Also included is a CAPS grant statement on work and handwritten receipt for the sale of one of her works of art.

The photographic material series includes photographs, negatives, and snapshots depicting Senga Nengudi, other individuals, and works of art.

Artwork includes a "Textile Design" book, sketchbooks, sketches, and leather artwork by Senga Nengudi, as well as works of art by others.

This series includes sound and video recordings featuring Senga Nengudi and others including Sun Ra, Barbara McCullough, Maren Hassinger, and Butch Morris. Recordings may include performances, as well as home video or candid recordings.
