Series includes an academic record transcript from Tufts University and 2 letters relating to Holt's early childhood education certification and teaching in 1966, in addition to records of her honorary doctorate from the University of South Florida, Tampa. Family history includes notes and news clippings relating to Holt's family and estate records for Ernest Holt (Holt's father); Holt's birth, christening, and marriage certificates, and a copy of her death certificate, as well as birth and death records for family members; and 3 sound recordings labeled to indicate they document family history. Also found are biographical statements, resumes, and Who's Who entries for Holt. Records relating to Robert Smithson include Smithson's death certificate and 2 letters related to the investigation of the plane crash in which he died, a record of funeral expenses, and records pertaining to the legal settlement following his death. Also found are emails and letters recording Holt's efforts to gather information related to Smithson's childhood, youth, and military service, circa 2005, with answers and information from people who knew Smithson and responded to Holt's requests. Additionally, one folder labeled "Astrology" includes sound recordings of astrology readings for Holt and two completed forms for Holt and Smithson noting character traits.

Correspondence is arranged as two subseries. Alphabetical correspondence is arranged alphabetically by individual named correspondent or is grouped with other correspondents with the same surname letter of the alphabet. Chronological correspondence is arranged as personal chronological correspondence followed by professional chronological correspondence, and is arranged roughly by year thereafter.

Correspondence, Alphabetical, circa 1966-2013
Holt's alphabetical correspondence generally tends to be personal in nature and consists primarily of letters and cards from friends with scattered drafts or copies of responses from Holt. However, correspondence may also touch on Holt's work as many of her friends were artists with whom she collaborated and corresponded about professional projects, and writers who wrote about her work and that of Robert Smithson. Additional letters from many of the correspondents represented in this subseries may be found in her professional correspondence files. Letters from Smithson to Holt include photocopies of two 1961 letters he wrote to her from Rome, Italy, and a 1968 postcard with slides attached he sent to her from Dusseldorf, Germany. Letters and postcards from artists and writers such as Lee Deffenbach, Dee Dee Halleck, Lucy Lippard, and May Stevens, document warm friendships as well as shared professional interests. Also found are substantive letters from Dennis Wheeler, the subject of Holt's film Revolve; and printouts of substantive email correspondence with writer Paul Serge.
Some of the correspondents represented here are family members, including Holt's aunt Ethel Tate, who was a subject of her film Underscan and her book Ransacked. Also found is correspondence with individuals Holt met through her spiritual practice, such as Eric Kolvig and Micah Schonberger.
Housed at the end of the subseries are the contents of a binder maintained by Holt primarily containing postcards and some individual letters and other items from artist friends dating from circa 1970s. The bulk of the postcards are from Carl Andre, but there are also postcards, letters, and other items from Don Graham, Bruce Kurtz, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, and Dennis Wheeler. Due to the deteriorating condition of the binder's plastic sleeves, items were removed and re-housed in folders but maintain Holt's original arrangement. Sheets of acid-free paper indicate where contents of each plastic sleeve began and ended.

Correspondence, Chronological, circa 1966-2014
While many of the letters in this series are requests for information with scattered responses from Holt, such as letters seeking directions to Sun Tunnels, or are from other artists seeking Holt's interest in and/or opinions of their work, the series also includes substantial documentation on many aspects of Holt's career. Letters can be cross-referenced with project files to provide additional context and information on specific projects. For example, many of the letters from the mid-1980s relate to Holt's proposed Sky Mound and her project Dark Star Park with her accompanying video Art in the Public Eye: The Making of Dark Star Park. Overall, professional correspondence also includes the following: permissions for use and reproductions of Holt's and Smithson's papers, artwork, film, video, and photographic material; reviews and other writings about Holt's and Smithson's work or about Holt's own writings; records of exhibitions in which Holt and/or Smithson were represented including transactional records of gifts and loans; grant applications and responses; documentation of Holt's efforts in seeking commissions and projects and her participation in professional events such as conferences and symposia; and records of financial and other business matters.
The series includes scattered correspondence with Virginia Dwan and Dwan Galleries, and John Weber Gallery and relates primarily to the art market for Holt's and Smithson's work and Holt's role in overseeing Smithson's estate. Letters in this series may include enclosures of printed material, writings, and photographs.
Also found here are greeting cards, including holiday and birthday cards, sent to Holt over the course of about five decades.

Writings and Notes, 1947-2013
Artist statements are primarily about Holt's individual projects and may duplicate or supplement those found in her project files. Writings on poems and sculpture also include versions of Holt's statements on individual works and projects, notes, and drafts, as well as quotations from other sources. Files also include answers to a questionnaire related to Holt's "Buried Poems," a copy of her 1977 essay on Sun Tunnels published in Art Forum, and a sound recording of a lecture delivered by Holt in 1987.
A folder entitled "Nancy's Writings, Early" includes a medical report from Holt's childhood, poetry (by Holt?), crossword work diagrams, and a March 15 1971 Bob Smithson and Bob Fiore conversation transcript. Desert quotes and writings include a notebook of Holt's with a draft of a letter to Dennis Wheeler and other notes and quotations related to the desert and Sun Tunnels, as well as loose sheets of quotations and photocopies of writings by others related to the desert.
Writings by others about Holt include draft manuscripts, some annotated by or accompanied by notes or responses from Holt. They include drafts by Baile Oakes who wrote and edited works on both Holt and Smithson. Writings by Ted Castle are primarily about subjects other than Holt but include a copy of a published article he wrote about her.

Notebooks, circa 1970s-2013
Notebooks are a primarily spiral-bound and many are dated by Holt on the front cover and are sequential. They contain a wide variety of information including journal entries, notes and small sketches related to current projects, many drafts of letters including to other artists, to do lists, names and addresses, records of phone calls, and everyday life notations such as recipes and lists. Later notebooks reveal Holt's growing interest in Buddhism, meditation, and dream journaling. One notebook contains childhood memories captured in a single sentence, one per page.
One of the earliest notebooks contains entries dating from 1970-1974 and consists primarily of journal entries which provide insight into Holt's ideas at the time, and her evolving sense of identity. She writes about her relationship with Robert Smithson, artist friends including Richard Serra, Carl Andre, and others, her spirituality, and her need for connection with other women in her growth as an artist, among many other things. Two of the notebooks are labeled as relating to the project 30 Below (1979) and the film Pine Barrens (1975), but many of Holt's projects, including Sun Tunnels (1976) are also documented to some extent in this series.

Series 4: Interviews, 1973-2007

Box 53

Series consists primarily of transcripts of interviews with Holt and related records such as correspondence, notes, and sound recordings. Also found are transcripts of a 1973 conversation between Lucy Lippard, Nancy Holt, and Robert Smithson about Eva Hesse and related records. Lippard instigated and recorded the conversation to aid in her writing of a book on Hesse's work. One folder includes records Holt conveyed, along with a copy of the conversation transcript, to Connie Butler at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Records include writings, and photos mentioned in the conversation including copies of a photograph of Smithson in the metal shop with his fabricators; Holt's Crossword work, based on an exhibition Essential Abstraction with Lippard's review of the exhibition; and Smithson's article "Quasi Infinities and the Waning of Space" in which he discusses Hesse's work. In addition to interviews with Holt there is a transcript of an interview Holt conducted with Al Poynter, a stone mason who worked with Holt on Rock Rings.

This series documents over 50 projects, including realized and unrealized projects, which Holt planned and/or executed from the early 1970s to the late 1990s. Project files may contain correspondence and memoranda with related studies and reports documenting any and all stages of a project; records of funding and expenses; Holt's proposals, conceptual drawings (primarily copies and blueprints), studies, plans, and photographic material including site photos, photos of Holt's models, and photos of finished projects; site planning records such as maps, engineering plans, and progress prints; and printed material related to projects including news clippings of publicity received and announcements and catalogs for project-related events.

Project files are arranged as 3 subseries.
The bulk of the project files are arranged alphabetically by title in subseries 5.1, with documentation of untitled (unrealized) projects housed at the end of the subseries arranged alphabetically by location. Other project material in series 5.2 is arranged alphabetically by folder title. Although some photographic material can be found in subseries 5.1. additional sets of photos and slides originally housed together, rather than filed with individual projects, are housed in subseries 5.3.

Projects by Name, circa 1900-2014
Records include Holt's correspondence with architects, designers, project managers, local government planning and budget departments, fabricators, and others involved at all stages of her projects. Often Holt conveyed developing ideas and change details on notes written on fax cover letters which are included here. The evolution of Holt's ideas can be further traced in what are called "drawings" in the container inventory and are primarily copies of Holt's originals which may include design sketches, studies, progress prints, plan layouts, and blueprints of her evolving and final designs.
Of note is substantive documentation of two of Holt's unfinished projects: the earthwork Sky Mound which has been on hold since 1984 and was originally envisioned to revive a landfill in the New Jersey Meadowlands four miles outside of Manhattan; and Solar Web (1984-89) an open structure that tracks the motion of the sun on Santa Monica beach. Although funded and approved by the California Coastal Commission, the installation was discontinued due to one dissenting vote on the council that claimed the work would spoil ocean views.
Also particularly well documented are Holt's Arlington installation Dark Star Park, and Up and Under, an installation of carved, winding mounds of earth and tunnels in a quarry in Nokia, Finland. Included in Dark Star Park records are tape logs for and transcripts of interviews conducted by Holt at the park site and documenting people responding to the work.
In addition to land art installations, documented projects include Holt's film projects Revolve and Underscan and her book projects Ransacked: Aunt Ethel, An Ending and Time Outs. Records include interview transcripts for Revolve, and background material for Underscan and the related Ransacked, including family photos dating to circa 1900, draft manuscripts, Holt's notes on the sequence of events surrounding her aunt's demise, and transcribed letters from her aunt. Also found are text, photographs, and a mock up of the book Time Outs.
Notably absent from the series are project files for Sun Tunnels with the exception of some related printed material and some copies of plans and drawings.

Correspondence with Alena Williams is primarily printouts of email exchanges related to the 2010-2012 retrospective Nancy Holt: Sightlines, and includes a prospectus for the subsequently published companion book. The 2014 item is a printout of an email message from Joey Kernisky to Harmony Hammond sending a "memorial blog draft" for Holt's memorial gathering in 2014.

Series documents general business transactions related to the exhibition, loan, and management of rights and reproductions of Holt's artwork including inventories, loan forms, and permissions for use and publication. Records in this series consist of business and professional files related to specific works by Holt and supplement and/or duplicate records found in her project files although they were originally housed among her general subject files and flat files.
Found here are records and items directly or probably related to Sun Tunnels, including copies of the sales orders for concrete piping, three long rolls of plastic sheeting with diagrams and cut out holes possibly used by Holt when designing the work, 2007 records related to oil and gas leases in the vicinity of the work, and sound and digital recordings. Also found are records and documentation of later maintenance and other work that took place on some of Holt's installations, including the relocation of Annual Ring, maintenance of the rails at Dark Star Park, and attempts to secure funding for maintenance of the park in which Up and Under is situated. Records also include contracts and agreements, correspondence, and printed material related to a variety of projects, and some unrealized projects, some of which may duplicate material found in Series 5: Project Files. Also found here are sound recordings of Dennis Wheeler that likely relate to Holt's film Revolve.

Series consists of files compiled by Holt on various subjects of interest to her. They include primarily printed material such as magazine articles and news clippings, publications, brochures, and programs and include portions of a clippings file Holt established. General clippings relate to art and culture, and other subjects of interest to Holt. Also found are 7 folders of blank postcards collected by Holt, probably used as reference and source material. Primarily from circa 1960s-1980s, postcards are grouped by location generally in the United States and Europe, by subject such as "Astronomy," or are unsorted. Cartoons are clipped from magazines and newspapers and include some copies made by Holt possibly for use in her work. Files named "Contemplative" include records of spiritual retreats Holt attended and include some correspondence with members of the Cistercian monastery, Saint Benedict's, including Micah Schonberger, Thomas Keating, and others. Folders on Dzogchen includes Holt's notes on a retreat experience and a handmade notebook on the subject. Also found are files on a Vipassana course taught by Holt. Files on the moon and space include information on the moon's phases, astronomy charts including one from 1835, and images of the moon on postcards and news clippings, and in photos.
Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject title. Folder labels were taken from Holt's original arrangement where possible.

General Business Records, circa 1961-2013
Series primarily documents various aspects of Holt's management of Smithson's estate and legacy such as overseeing donations, the maintenance of contracts and agreements, the handling of requests for loans for exhibitions and permissions for publications and use, and the appraisal and inventory of Smithson's library donated to the Archives of American Art. The series also includes inventories and related records maintained by John Weber Gallery and James Cohan Gallery who represented Smithson, and scattered documentation related to the whereabouts of individual artworks. John Weber Gallery settlement records relate to the termination of the gallery's representation agreements with Holt and with the Smithson Estate.
Records of donations and gifts from Holt's collection of work by Smithson include appraisals, correspondence, and deeds of gift, and include documentation of the Spiral Jetty agreement with DIA. Also found are records related to the maintenance of Smithson's land art and monitoring of their condition; authentications for several artworks; and two unsigned copies of an affidavit stating that Smithson's rock salt and mirror sculptures (originally constructed for an exhibition at Cornell University in 1969), should continue to exist as unique and unduplicable works.
Also found in this series are two folders of Smithson correspondence. They include photocopies of letters from Smithson to George Lester (1960-1963) and some general business correspondence such as letters from galleries and institutions about Smithson's work, sales, exhibitions, and potential visits and speaking engagements. One letter from Dwan Gallery relates to Centro de Arte y Communicación and includes photographic prints of a plantation being considered as a site for a work by Smithson.
Film and video records include correspondence, receipts, and photocopies related to Jane Crawford's 1994 film Rundown, produced by Robert Fiore. Exhibition records include correspondence relating to the curation of a few Smithson exhibitions and catalog essays, loan documentation, and press coverage. Exhibitions documented include a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 2004.
