Correspondence documents Wortz's appointments at California State University, Long Beach, and California State College, San Bernardino, as well as commissions for the publication Arts Magazine in the 1970s. Also documented are some of Wortz's professional activities outside of UCI, including serving on various advisory boards, commissions, and juries; lecturing and consulting work; and loans of her personal art collection.
Correspondence includes scattered letters and postcards from artists including Eleanor Antin, Christo and Jean Claude, John Coplans, David French, Craig Kauffman, Cork Marchesi, Jim Risser, Eve Sonneman, Hap Tivey, Marc Van Der Marck, and Elsa Warner; and historians and curators including Sandy Ballatore and Susan Larsen. One folder, which retains the original label, "Artist and Other Special Cards," includes multiple postcards from Lena Handschy and Martha Rosler, and mail art from Daniel Barber.
Also documented is a trip to Europe, primarily Paris and Milan, in 1978-1979, funded by a critic's grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, during which Wortz conducted research for a book on light and space, and visited the collection of Count Panza in Milan.

Boxes 2, 18

This series consists of transcripts of four interviews conducted by Wortz and two interviews by Michael Auping and Timothy Owens. Also found is a sound recording of an interview with Nina Wiener. The folder label indicates there are two sound cassettes of this interview. If this is correct, the second cassette label evidently contains a typo as it reads: "Werner. KQED interview."

Series 4: Writings and Notes , 1958-circa 1990
4.25 Linear feet
Boxes 2-6, 19

A wide range of Wortz's writings are collected in this series, including independent professional writings, and writings produced during Wortz's tenure at the University of California, Irvine. Also found are notes and essays from her student years at various schools.
Some draft manuscripts of articles and essays are individually named, while others are grouped chronologically. Manuscripts believed to be drafts for exhibitions catalogs are identified as "exhibition essays/introductions," but may replicate some of the material arranged as "articles/essays." In addition to typed drafts, xome folders contain related documentation such as scattered correspondence, notes, printed material, and photographic material.
Class notes include examination books and typescripts of class essays, in addition to notes taken in classes, and additional course material.
Copies of Wortz's published catalogs, essays, and articles have been collected in this series, with the exception of UCI printed material that contains writings by Wortz. That material is housed with other UCI Fine Arts Gallery exhibition material Series 6.1.

Wortz's administrative files document her wide range of activities and responsibilities at UCI, as Chair of Studio Art, as Director of the Fine Arts Gallery, and as an administrator involved in many campus-wide and University system-wide departments and committees.
General correspondence and memoranda files, and administrative files arranged by subject, document these activities and events through correspondence, memoranda, committee files, planning documents and reports, and printed and photographic material. Wortz's involvement in the Intercampus Arts Committee is heavily documented, as is her administration of the Fine Arts Gallery. Gallery files include planning documents, correspondence and memoranda, lists, schedules, budget material, and published catalogs of exhibitions at the Fine Arts Gallery and other University of California museums and galleries. Many of the catalogs include essays and introductions written by Wortz.

Boxes 11-15, 18

A large portion of material in the collection appeared to be loosely arranged by artist name or subject, representing a broad range of Wortz's activities and interests beyond her activities at the University of California, Irvine. This material was subsequently grouped as a separate series of subject files, and arranged by either artist name or general subject name. Some of the material may overlap with content in other series.
Records consist primarily of printed material, including exhibition announcements and catalogs, clippings such as reviews of exhibitions or other events, and some photographic material including slides and photographic prints.
This series is arranged as two subseries.
  • 7.1. Artist Files, circa 1960-1988 (1.75 linear feet)
  • 7.2. General Files , 1960-1990 (2.5 linear feet)

File names used in this series were taken directly from Wortz's headings when available. Subjects range from general categories such as art and politics, women artists, and subjects which explore the interplay between art, religion, and spirituality, to specific conferences, projects, and organizations in which Wortz was involved. These include Fellows of Contemporary Art, an organization for which she curated exhibitions and organized art tours, the Museum Management Institute, museum docent training programs, and the board of Arts and Architecture magazine. At the end of the series are index files relating to a combination of subjects, bibliographies, and art vocabularies.
