Biographical/Historical Note

Max Beckmann (1884-1950) was a painter and educator who was born and educated in Germany and based in New York after World War II.


Mathilde Q. Beckmann, the artist's widow, loaned diaries and notebooks for microfilming in 1977 and these were subsequently all returned to her. The Max Beckmann papers and material listed in this finding aid were donated to the Archives of American Art by Mathilde Q. Beckmann in 1983.
