Summary: Bound collection assembled by Bray of 39 landscape and figure sketches drawn on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, by William Morris Hunt and by his peers and students, including Ellen Day Hale, Susan Hale, Jane Hunt, Fitz Hugh Lane, and others. They are evidence of the artistic community of late nineteenth-century Gloucester, and they reflect the influence of Hunt's teaching on his students.
Biographical/Historical Note
Maria H. Bray was the proprietress of Willow Cottage, a boardinghouse in the Magnolia section of Gloucester, Mass., where many of William Morris Hunt's students stayed.
Provenance
Lent for microfilming 1981 by the Cape Ann Historical Association, which received it from Theodora Willard, the neice of Maria H. Bray.
