Original footage includes two interviews with Jacob Lawrence, footage of Lawrence working in his studio, speaking with students, and footage of his artwork in a gallery. Additional original footage includes a public program featuring a conversation between Lawrence and curator Richard Powell at the Whitney Museum in 1992, and interviews with curator Barbara Jones and Francine Sedes of Tacoma, Washington, and Kinshasa Holman Conwill, who hosts the program. Transcripts are present for all original footage.
Production material includes reproductions of Lawrence artwork, a contact sheet of film set photographs in Lawrence's studio, edited transcripts, notes, draft scripts, a final edit and final script.
The finished documentary is found in both a long and short version.
