Kenjilo Nanao papers, circa 1885-2017, bulk 1970-2000

Correspondence is mostly personal in nature, between friends, family, and other artists in both English and Japanese, with some correspondence with universities and museums regarding exhibitions interspersed throughout. Notable correspondents include John and Kati Casida, William Hyland, Fumiyo and Jun Kaneko, son Max Nanao, Tama Nanao, Nathan Oliveira, Leta and Mel Ramos, Kayoko Watanabe, Masaki Yanagihara, and others. There are numerous bound journals mostly containing letter drafts by Kenjilo Nanao. This series also includes letters addressed to Gail Chadell Nanao from various individuals.

A great deal of the correspondence in this series is written in Japanese, including numerous letter drafts written by Kenjilo Nanao to various people.

The bound jounals of letter drafts written by Kenjilo Nanao are at the beginning of series in chronological order, followed by alphabetical correspondence, correspondence with first names only, unidentified correspondence, then loose letter drafts written by Kenjilo Nanao in Japanese to various correspondents. The Gail Nanao correspondence is grouped together at the end in alphabetical order by correspondent.

The bulk of this series has been digitized, except for blank pages of the letter draft journals.
