Scope and Contents
The John and Monica Haley papers measure 3.8 linear feet and date from circa 1905-1992.
Biographical material contains John Haley's resume and birth certificate as well as multiple Naval documents including his military orders, uniform patches, dog tags, and identification documents. Correspondence is between John and Monica Haley, mostly sent to Monica during John's time in the Navy during World War Two in the South Pacific, and also includes letters received from Earl and Clyta Loran, Vaclav Vytlacil, Edward J. Haley, and Glen Wessels. Writings includes notes by Haley, as well as a manuscript by Vytlacil, and the manuscript and notes for Manual of Model Making by Haley.
Printed material includes exhibition catalogs for John Haley, multiple copies of the monthly publication The Navy Reservist, news clippings, printed materials related to the United States Navy, and prints of artwork. Photographic material includes photographs of John Haley, photographs from his time spent in Guam, and photographs of his artwork. Artwork includes sketches and sketchbooks, as well as one painting of Haley in his Navy Uniform, and one landscape drawing.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Papers were lent for microfilming in 1978 by John Haley. The bulk of the microfilmed material and additional papers were donated in 1987 by John and Monica and in 1992 by Monica.
Separated Materials
The Archives of American Art also holds microfilm of material lent for microfilming (reel 1355) including papers related to Hans Hofmann which include five letters from Hofmann to Worth Ryder, three letters between Hofmann and Haley, two manuscripts, one in German, by Hofmann, Creation in Form and Color – A Textbook for Instruction Art (1931), a lecture by Hofmann, photographs taken in Germany of Hofmann, Miz Hofmann, John Haley, Alfred Jensen, Ed and Isabell Rupprecht, Joan Hein, Cameron Booth, the Hofmann School building in Munich, and photographs of works by Hofmann's students, brochures for the school, Hofmann exhibition catalogs, and miscellany. Loaned materials were returned to the lender and are not described in the collection container inventory.
