Included are a letter from Keith postmarked June 15, 1898, addressed to Maud Wilkinson, Yosemite Valley, Marisposa, CA, thanking Maud for her "pleasant letter"; a letter from Keith to Mrs. Richardson, Berkeley, July 1, 1905, thanking her for thinking of him at "Xmas time" and wishing her "many Xmas and Happy New Years in the future"; and a note enclosing a photograph of Keith in his studio with the painting Kilmeny and requesting "When 'Kilmeny' comes to town if she will come to the studio." Also found is a pocket-sized book, The Story of James Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd (cover stamped 'Bought on board the 'Columba' Royal Route to the Highlands'), containing Hogg's poem "Kilmeny." The book includes an inscription from Keith "For Berkeley's Kilmeny." The inside cover is annotated by Hanks "This is the story of William Keith's painting dedicated to my mother Maud Wilkinson. This is the large painting with the driftwood frame."
