Identification on note attached to verso (typewritten): William Zorach (1887- ); influened [sic] by Matisse in his early years, Zorach worked as a painter through phases of abstractionism and cubism; in 1920 he became a sculptor; his work is unmistakably marked by the early influences, but has moved steadily in the direction of a romantic realism in the great American tradition; a staunch advocate of direct carving, he has recently moved from this position into one of greater latitude toward handling the material of the sculptor.
