Portrait of the Artist(First of Five)
hard at work in his stable-turned-studio at Kansas City, Mo., famed artist Thomas Hart Benton does the preliminary work for the $60,000 mural he will create at the Truman Library in Independence, Mo. A severe critic of abstract Modern Art, the 70-year-old painter says he didn't want to do anymore murals, but the "Truman thing" seemed very important. Former President Harry S. Truman authorized the giant painting.
