Identification on accompanying note (typewritten): "John Marin (1870-1953), Steichen, Sheeler and Marin, shown here, were long-time friends. Marin was an architect before takin up painting. He lived in Europe from 1905 to 1910, where he studied the work of Cezanne and the Cubists. Back in the United States, he developed an original technique in water color, a use of the flat paper surface exploding into dynamic scenes of the Maine coast and New York skyscrapers."
