Biographical/Historical Note
Mary Schmidt Campbell (1947- ) is an academic administrator and museum curator. Campbell was a transformational director for the Studio Museum in Harlem from 1977-1987, the cultural affairs commissioner for New York City, dean of the Tisch School of Fine Arts at New York University, and the president of Spelman College from 2015-2022.

This interview is part of the Archives of American Art Oral History Program, started in 1958 to document the history of the visual arts in the United States, primarily through interviews with artists, historians, dealers, critics and administrators.
