Summary: The Greenwich House Pottery records measure 12.7 linear feet and date from circa 1920-2020. The papers document that history of the Pottery through organizational records, correspondence, printed material, press clippings, photographic material, and audio-visual material.
Organizational records include ledgers, annual reports, internal reports and communications, newsletters, policy manuals, membership lists and faculty records, oral history interviews, and records of the Pottery's permanent collection of ceramic pots and sculpture. The collection also includes the glaze records of the Pottery and many faculty members, as well as a large quantity of sketches and drawings by ceramicist Margaret Israel.
Correspondence includes letters to and from artists, funders, and other supporters of the organization, including such notable visitors as Peter Voulkos, Ron Nagle, and Betty Woodman, among many others.
Printed material includes announcements and invitation cards for exhibitions, sales, lectures, and workshops, annual calendars and schedules of classes and events, and the like. Press clippings date from the early 1920s through the 2010s, and include both scrapbooks and loose clippings.
Photographic prints and negatives document the Pottery's history of classes, exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations, and other events. A smaller number of photographs document other artistic activities at the Greenwich House Settlement such as musical and theatrical performances. 35mm slides document exhibitions, workshops and events, the history of the facility, the permanent collection, and works of art by members of the faculty.
Audiovisual materials include audio recordings of interviews or conversations with artists such as Peter Voulkos, Don Reitz, Val Cushing, Tony Hepburn, Rudy Aiuto, James Makins, Byron Temple, and others. Also present are nine videocassettes and one 16mm film documenting the Pottery's activities.
