3.1: Writings by White, 1936-1975
Writings by White include two addresses to the first and second Annual Conference of Negro Artists, and a corrected typescript draft of an autobiographical essay by White in which he discusses his upbringing and the experiences that informed his art, and mentions his first marriage to Elizabeth Catlett. White's essay was used by Sidney Finkelstein in his monograph on White, Charles White: ein Künstler Amerikas, published in 1955 by VEB Verlag der Kunst. Correspondence related to this publication can be found in Series 4.3: Projects and Commissions.
Also included here are White's notes of citations collected and filed on index cards grouped according to source, and statements such as "Statement on Personal Philosophy."

Writing by others include several essays on White, including an English typescript draft of Sidney Finkelstein's writings on White, and a copy of a 1962 article on White by Janice Lovoos which is supplemented with notes and typescript statements by White on his philosophy and methods of working. Also found are records related to Benjamin Horowitz's 1956 book on White, Images of Dignity: The Drawings of Charles White. These include three drafts, notes by Horowitz, and printed material of publicity for the book.
