Series 1: Artists' Files , 1945-1986
3.5 Linear feet
Boxes 1-3

Artists' files include: biographical material; correspondence; sales of artwork; guest lists; notes and writings; business-related material; printed matter, e.g., exhibition catalogues, brochures, clippings, press releases, reproductions; and photographs of artwork and artists.
Biographical material contains curriculum vitae and artists' statements. Correspondence consists of letters, postcards, greeting cards, and telegrams between Viviano and artists, their family members, collectors, dealers, museum representatives, art historians, and others. Correspondence, for the most part, concerns sales, market valuations, and scheduling of exhibitions. Letters reflect the personal relationships that Viviano developed with many of the gallery's artists and collectors. Correspondence also includes business-related materials such as invoices, shipping receipts and statements, invoices, sales and expense reports, and miscellaneous legal claims.
There are substantive files on Renato Birolli, Robert Broderson, Joseph Glasco, Manabu Mabe, César Manrique, Luciano Minguzzi, Ennio Morlotti, Bernard Perlin, Daniel Rice, and Bernard Rosenthal. Miscellaneous artists' files include biographical materials, checklists, consignment sale slips from the Grand Street Settlement, a typescript on Max Beckmann, notes, lists, and exhibition catalogues.
The series is arranged alphabetically by artist and materials within the folders are in chronological order. Artists' files for which numerous documents are found are further divided by type of material.

Series 2: Correspondence , 1939-1985
5.5 Linear feet
Boxes 3-6

This series contains the gallery's general correspondence with artists, their family members, dealers, collectors, prospective clients, art historians, curators, museum directors, and others; correspondence with museums, galleries, and art-related institutions in the United States; and correspondence with museums, galleries, and art-related institutions abroad.
Included with the correspondence are loan forms, consignment agreements, invoices, shipping receipts, printed materials, annotated exhibition catalogues, and photographs of artwork.
Correspondence is arranged into 3 subseries:
  • 2.1: General Correspondence, 1939-1985
  • 2.2: Correspondence with Museums, Galleries, and Art-Related Institutions, United States, 1950-1984
  • 2.3: Correspondence with Museums, Galleries, and Art-Related Institutions Abroad, 1951-1975
2.1: General Correspondence, 1939-1985
This subseries contains Viviano's correspondence with artists and their family members, historians, clients, publishers, and individuals at museums, galleries, and non-profit arts organizations. Included are letters from Margaret Viviano, who worked closely with her sister Catherine in the gallery. There are files of Catherine Viviano's scattered correspondence, some of it personal. Materials include carbon copies, drafts, postcards, telegrams, and photographs of artwork. Also found are illustrated letters, holiday and greeting cards, many with original artwork.
Letters include detailed information on the gallery's general operations: acquisitions, sales, loans, shipping and delivery of artwork, insurance claims, and requests for biographical material on artists and permission to reproduce artwork. Letters also provide an overview of Viviano's efforts in promoting artists, developing relationships with clients and collectors, and organizing exhibitions. Among the artists frequently referred to in the correspondence are Afro and Mirko Basaldella, Max Beckmann, Renato Birolli, Robert Broderson, Leonardo Cremonini, Joseph Glasco, Luciano Minguzzi, Bernard Perlin, Faustus Pirandello, Bernard Rosenthal, and Kay Sage.
The bulk of the correspondence with artists represented by the gallery is found in the artists' files. Some of the names in general correspondence can also be found in correspondence with galleries, museums, and art-related institutions in the United States and abroad.

2.2: Correspondence with Museums, Galleries, and Art-Related Institutions, United States, 1950-1984
This subseries consists of the gallery's letters to representatives of museums, dealers, independent schools, universities, colleges, and non-for-profit institutions. Subjects discussed are market valuations and appraisals; acquisitions and sales; and loans of artwork for exhibitions.
Correspondence also includes memoranda, consignment agreements, loan forms, shipping and receipt of objects forms, lists of artwork with valuations and sale prices, insurance claim forms, ledger pages with sale prices of artwork, guest lists, press releases, printed material, clippings, exhibition announcements, invitations, and photographs of artwork.
Viviano maintained an ongoing correspondence with numerous public and university museums, galleries, and arts organizations in the United States. Of particular note, the correspondence with the Museum of Modern Art's (New York) Department of Circulating Exhibitions and Junior Council provides a rich source of information on acquisitions and sales from the 1950's through 1960's. Also found is correspondence pertaining to Catherine Viviano's involvement in professional associations.

Series 3: Business Records , 1949-1972
1 Linear foot
Boxes 10-11

This series documents Catherine Viviano's business transactions as a dealer and after the gallery closed, as a freelance art consultant. Files include ledgers, a notebook of sales and loose pages of sales, check registers, correspondence, notes, and scattered business and legal files.
Ledgers record cash receipts, cash disbursements, accounts receivable, accounts payable, Catherine Viviano's personal expenses, sales by artists, and a general journal. Also found are a notebook and loose ledger pages of sales and payments to artists, including a list of the artwork sold at the gallery's first exhibition. Generally, the titles of artwork are omitted in the sales records.
Included are Catherine Viviano's letters to the managing agent for the 42 East 57th Street building pertaining to the renewal of the lease and requests for routine repairs in the gallery. Miscellaneous business records contain shipping instructions and a receipt for delivery of artwork. Business records can also be found in artists' files, correspondence, and printed material.
Legal files include a suit for non-payment of art brought by Catherine Viviano against a client and an affidavit with respect to character for Peter C. Salerno for his admission to the State Bar of New York.
Ledgers and a notebook of sales of artwork to individuals were disbound by the processor. The records are arranged in chronological order.
