Carnegie Institute, Museum of Art records, 1883-1962, bulk 1885-1962

Card catalogs include three sets of catalogs created by the Museum of Art to track the outgoing and incoming correspondence contained in this collection. When the museum implemented changes to its record keeping and filing systems in 1907 and 1918, they began a fresh set of cards to track the new system. Set 1 (1895-1906) consists of original cards that track correspondence with an item level numerical code system. Set 2 (1907-1917) and Set 3 (1918-1940) consists of photocopies of original cards that track correspondence based on an assigned number system. These two sets were merged together into one contiguous set by the Archives of American Art during the microfilming process.

While these catalogs are no longer necessary to the use of the collection, they provide a useful secondary index of correspondents and letters received by date. Additionally, Set 3 indicates those instances where an individual's correspondence was filed in what now comprises of Series 2-4.

The original alphabetical arrangement by name of the organization or correspondent has been retained. Information on the cards includes the file number assigned by the Museum of Art and a chronological date listing of every letter associated with the correspondent.
