Summary: REELS 3932-3935: Two resumes, 1954 and 1974; correspondence, 1939-1970; lecture material and course outlines, undated and 1936-1963; a copy of "A Philosophy of Art," by Henry S. F. Cooper, 1957; a copy of Hayes' review "The Castiglione Travels in America," 1960; subject files, 1936-1975, containing correspondence, notes, writings, and printed material pertaining to 32 committees and organizations with which Hayes was associated;
a reprint of Hayes' report, "On Art and Education," undated; a schedule of meetings of an Andover evening study program, "The Shape of Things," 1953; a copy of an article, "Visual Comprehension and the Language Disabled Child," 1975; 6 photographs of Hayes, 1948-1964; a photograph of the S.I.D. Home Furnishings Design Competition; and 2 photographs of the Smithsonian Art Commission, 1963-1968.

Biographical/Historical Note

Museum director. Director, Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., 1940-1969; Secretary, College Art Association, 1959-1964; Director, American Academy in Rome, 1969-1973. Hayes conducted a nationwide survey of small art museums, school art museums and art in private schools, 1936, and served as Trustee for American Federation of Arts, 1940-1970, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1951-1971, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and on the Boston Arts Festival planning committee, 1954-1968.


Donated by Bartlett H. Hayes, 1977-1978. The unmicrofilmed material was part of the 1978 donation, but was not transferred from the Addison Gallery of American Art until 1991.
