Size: 0.8 linear ft.

Summary: Research material on untrained artists, including photographs, an interview with Mike Carpenter, a documentary about J. B. Murray, and a letter from Nasisse to Howard Finster.
Included are twenty-one artists' files containing photographs of untrained artists and their works of art. The artists include: E. M. Bailey, Brother Joseph Zoetl in Alabama, Tessie Carroll, Chief Rolling Mountain Thunder (Frank van Zant), Emanuel "Litto" Damonte, S. P. Dinsmoor, Sam Doyle, John Ehn, Howard Finster, Laura Pope Forrester, Dilmus Hall, Irene Hall, Bessie Harvey, J. B. Murray, Grandma Tressa Prisbrey, Dow Pugh, R. Rice, Royal Robertson, St. EOM (Eddie Owens Martin), James "Son Ford" Thomas, and Mose Tolliver.
Also included are a copy of a letter from Nasisse to Howard Finster, 1985, discussing Finster's first dealer, Jeffrey Camp, and offering his advice to limit production of his work; four photographs of the "Desert View Tower," Jeff McKissack's "The Orange Show," the "Milkovitch Beer Can House," and miscellaneous works; an untranscribed audio cassette interview of Mike Carpenter conducted by Nasisse; and a videocassette, J.B. Murry: A Video Documentary of an Artist and His Work (1985) produced by Nasisse, containing many of Murray's paintings and drawings, as well as his comments on his art and visions. [Murray was known also as J. B. Murry; Nasisse titled the video accordingly.]

Biographical/Historical Note

Ceramic sculptor and instructor; Athens, Ga. Nasisse is an assistant professor in the art department at the University of Georgia, and has been visiting untrained artists and photographing their art and environments since the 1970s.
