These files contain correspondence with galleries, museums, and clients as well as with art retoreres and conservators, art warehouses, shipping companies, auction houses, and foundations. Correspondence contains proposals of artwork that might interest clients, client referrals to other galleries, logistical arrangements for shipments of artwork, clippings or brochures that might interest correspondents, and arrangements for visits. These correspondence files occasionally contain reference photographs, transparencies, slides, and inventory cards or photcopies of inventory cards of artwork mentioned in the letters.
The most voluminous correspondence are mostly with other galleries or art organizations. The following is a list of correspondents with the most files in this subseries: Annely Jude Fine Art; Art Dealers Association of America; Galerie Deux; Gimpel Fils, Ltd.; Grounds for Sculpture (correspondence regarding architecture and landscaping for Top Gallant Farm); Kukje Gallery; Munzen und Medaillen, A.G.; Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc.; Spark Inc.; Strouth, Howard and Penelope; and Wetterling Teo Gallery Pte. Ltd.
Some correspondents in this subseries might overlap with those found in the Authentications and Offers subseries below, as well as in the André EmmerichPersonal Correspondence subseries.
Records are primarily in English, but some correspondence is in German, French, and Spanish.
Most correspondence dates from 1962-1968 and 1992-1998. There is very little correspondence dating from the 1950s, 1970s, 1980s, or 2000s.
For correspondence attaching invoices or agreements regarding specific sales, purchases, or consignments, please see the Sales, Purchases, and Consignments series. For additional correspondence with art publications, please see the Advertising and Publicity subseries of the Administrative Files series.
Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically. Each letter of the alphabet concludes with misclleaneous bulk arrangement for correspodnents with fewer than five documents.

1.2: Appraisals, 1961-1998, 2000
Correspondence regarding appraisals usually comes from individuals and organizations requesting André Emmerich's appraisal of artwork. The requests are occasionally accompanied by images of the artwork in question. Appraisals dating from the 1960s usually refer to Pre-Columbian art and contain more descriptive detail than appraisals for 20th century art. Appraisals dating from the 1990s frequently contain standardized language. The requester is usually the artowrk's current owner, but Emmerich was also sometimes contacted by museums considering an acquisition or by insurance adjustors after a theft.
The correspondence is arranged chronologically.

Most of these offers are either declined by the gallery or are referred to other galleries, dealers, or auction houses, but occasionally Emmerich would request additional photographs or information about the object or ask for a chance to see or handle the item in person.
Some of these correspondents are also represented in the Galleries/Museums/Clients subseries.

This subseries contains letters from artists contacting the gallery looking for representation. Some attach press clippings, exhibition programs and announcements, resumes or curricula vitae, biographies, artists' statements, catalogs, publications, business cards, postcards, or other publicity materials. Most of the letters are written by the artists themselves, but a few are written by someone else recommending the artist. Letters are occasionally accompanied by photographs or slides of artwork. Most of these artists receive a negative form letter in return. In later years, the gallery referred this form letter as the "Sorry Artist Letter" or "SAL."
Some correspondence is in French, Dutch, Italian, and German.
The correspondence is arranged chronologically.
