9.6: Auction Records, 1884-1911

This record system was created by Rose H. Lorenz to aid Charles De Kay in the preparation of Thomas E. Kirby's autobiography,
Art Under the Hammer
. The files are arranged chronologically and contain research material for the book and are usually prefaced with a brief handwritten note by Lorenz. The files may include correspondence to and from sellers, buyers, artists, dealers, and art experts, as well as clippings, priced lists of sales items, photographs of sales items, and typed and carbon manuscript pages from
Art Under the Hammer
. The majority of the files concern American Art Association auctions. Files on exhibitions are included in the series and some files contain only manuscript pages or clippings. Auction records can also be found in series 1.2.
