Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, July 4, 1890, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Saturday, July 4, 1890 Sara and I went out to Binnewater by the 3.15 train. Judge & Mrs. Schummaker and Will Lawton and his wife were on the train going to Mohonk. At the W. S. Station we saw Frank Thurber and Mrs. Mary Putnam Jacobi. Fred was at Binnewater with his three seated wagon expecting John and Julia with us. Lily & Gertrude Tremper were at Fords and Edgar Knapp and [?]. The 4th was pretty hot with showers and we remained quietly at home. John & Julia drove up and returned in the evening. We had a ride in the evening but it was very windy. We came away with the stage directly after breakfast and were home before 11. I went down town to pay Mr. Lindsley for the men who did the blasting but he could not tell me the amount. Our girl came back shortly after we arrived. The weather has cleared off delightfully cool with N. wind. I spent the afternoon finishing shingling the well. Then I brushed the inside of the curb carefully removing all the dirt and cobwebs, meanwhile keeping the opening in the well covered with a large linen cloth. I then nailed on the outside securely a fine wire netting so that now the children cannot throw anything inside. The water is abundant and clear and cold so that now I feel we can do without ice.
