Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, April 12, 1890, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Saturday, Apr 12, 1890 Tom came running into the house and said the fence on the side hill was on fire. I have been expecting this. We each took a pail of water and went down. It had just been set fire back of the concrete houses and we put it out before it had done too much damage. We found a whole box of matches and it had evidently been done purposely by mischievous boys. We went down after dinner and raked the leaves together and burned all that were dry enough to burn.
