Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, March 20, 1888, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Tuesday, Mar 20, 1888 Still at the Academy. We adjourned early as we were all very tired. We are getting towards the end but it grows very difficult. Clarke at the club last night told me of several people who came to my sale prepared to pay a great deal for my pictures. He said he would have given me $500 in my room, the day he called before my sale, for my Eastern Sky at Sunset, but then I cant understand why he would not pay 450 for it at the Academy. I deposited by check $4,978 today and sent Tom [?] Girard $50. It is rainy and disagreeable.
