Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, May 20, 1885, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Wednesday, May 20, 1885 All day in my room doing nothing much. I can paint no more and shall soon leave town and am only waiting to hear from Nashville and Detroit and one or two other minor matters. I took Marion who is keeping house in her mothers place to Niblos to see "Over the Garden Wall"[.] It amused both of us not a little. When I came to my room found a note from Sam Coykendall declining the offer of our place I made him on the ground that with the expenditure he would wish to make it would cost him too much money. This is a little discouraging but after all just what I expected he would say, no matter what price I named.
