Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, September 23, 1884, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Tuesday, Sept 23, 1884 Made another study near the same place. Rained a little in the night and was foggy this morning, the sun came out at breakfast time but it clouded up when we went out and remained grey all day. A fox crossed the brook just near where we sat and a little later a hound. Sometime after came a terrier evidently on the same track. There is very little autumn color as yet but the past day or two has given a decided sense of change to the woods. They seem just ready to burst into color and I think in a week there will be a great deal of bright foliage. I fell and bruised my right thumb so seriously that I fear I shall lose the nail just as my other one which I hurt in June is nearly grown out.
