Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, May 21, 1884, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Wednesday, May 21, 1884 My father went with me to Burgennis where I got the plants for the cemetery and we drove over there and I set them out. Petunias on Gertrudes grave, Pansies on my mothers, Balsam on Maurices, Lobelia Grasilis on Janes, Pinks on my grandmothers. I did not finish them all intending to go after dinner. At dinner John McEntee sent up to ask me to go fishing with him over in Dutchess Co. Sara and my father urged me to go and I made my preparations hurriedly and we went by the 3.30 boat and drove to Rock City, where we spent the night. The apple blossoms were all out and the ride was charming.
