Friday, Jan 12, 1883 Beard told me last night my picture had been sold at Atlanta. After breakfast went down town to see Menger. Menger is dangerously ill but saw his son who said the pictures had all come back from Atlanta except my small one and they reported that in all probability sold although the purchaser was absent from there for a short time. That would have helped me out with the taxes but Calvert assisted me to what I lacked. A letter from Booth yesterday from Berlin. Notices of his successful debut there last night in this mornings papers. Wrote him congratulations. Very cold weather. Got my two water colors ready for the exhibition. In the evening went to see the Boston Artists pictures at the American Art Gallery. They seemed to create a favorable impression but I confess I was not much impressed by any display of the higher qualities in Art.
