Sunday, Feb 12, 1882 Jamie and Gertrude Tomkins came down today. Calvert, Jamie and I took a walk down town to see the Brooklyn bridge. It has advanced considerably since I saw it last. The floor beams are nearly all laid and it looks as though it might soon be completed. We came back through Wall St. to see some of the new buildings. Came over to my studio with Julia, Gertrude, Marion, Edith and Helen Rood and Jamie to see my picture. Maurice went to Newport on Thursday to see Pumpelly about getting a situation on his survey in the West. He came back yesterday and stopped at the house. He is going and is to report in April. I hope he will be equal to the occasion but have my fears, while I am glad he has another opportunity to try to do something. Called at Pinchots in the evening. Met the Misses [blank] and their brothers and Rev Dr. Bartlett from Indianapolis. He had just been telling a story about me which Mr. Taylor, the Episcopal clergyman told. It was all wrong and I had to tell it new. The story of the hog coming into Vaux's room at Connellys, of Vaux meeting old Mr. Connelly a year after and asking him how the "old hog" was. The old man who had forgotten the incident and thinking he was inquiring about his wife said "I am sorry to say Mrs. Connelly is not well." On my way down called at Platts.
