Saturday, Dec 9, 1882 Painted today but not very satisfactorily on a new picture. Church called. Have not seen him nor heard of him in a long time. He looks old but seemed in good spirits. Went home by 4 o'clock train. Bowyer went with me. Found Downing somewhat improved but he seemed dull and silent. He is to sail on Tuesday to join the Booth party in England and Wheeler is going to accompany him. Found my father poorly.
