Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, June 24, 1881, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Friday, June 24, 1881 My father[,] Maurice and I attended Gus Trempers funeral at his house in Sleightburg. He was buried in Montrepose. His poor old mother, Aunt Nellie was there. He is the second son she has lost within a year. His brother Ed a drinking man and the "black sheep" excited my pity. At such times how we all think of our errors and our short comings. His wife regretted to Julia Dillon yesterday that she had sometimes been impatient and she seemed about unable to bear his death and sobbed and moaned piteously. Too late for regrets. The awful indifference with which all our despair falls upon the dulled ear and the unresponsive heart. Today I rewrote my will and now must have it witnessed. How reluctant we are to do these things.
