Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, September 22, 1880, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Wednesday, Sept 22, 1880 Went to Marblehead and spent a couple of hours walking about the town which I found quaint and interesting. Alices baby was christened "Gertrude" this evening by Mr. Leonard who christened Bella nearly two years ago when dear Gertrude was there. I carried her down in my arms as she was too ill to walk. All that sad time was most vividly recalled to me tonight and I was very much affected and found it difficult to control my feelings. Indeed all the time I was here I could not help thinking very much of dear Gertrudes last days and the room where I found her sitting beside the bed crying and looking so ill on my return from Maine and which I occupied now seemed almost to be filled with her dear presence.
