Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, March 15, 1880, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Monday, Mar 15, 1880 Came back today by noon train. I had a very satisfactory visit home notwithstanding the melancholy which seems to brood over all there where I so much miss dear Gertrude. What I suffer in my longing for her there I can never express and it saddens me afresh always to come away. I am glad M[?] is to be there for a while and wish I could have staid there with her. Yesterday I wrote to Mr. Irvin, to Booth, to Janette and to Lucy. It is very lonely getting back here but I shall be busy from this out and so I try to bear my loneliness as well as I can.
