Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, December 8, 1880, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Wednesday, Dec 8, 1880 Just after I had accepted Whittredges invitation yesterday I had a note from Holt asking me to his house to dinner and to go and hear Henschel sing with some lady friends. I was rather glad I had a previous engagement for although it was very kind of Holt I did not at all feel in the mood to meet strangers. I went into the club this evening and found Oscar Sawyer there. I have not seen him since Gertrude died. He has been gone to Japan for three years and has only lately returned. He had just come from College Hill. He said he was lost here and found so few people he knew. I could not talk very freely with him there but he said he would come to my room tomorrow.
