Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, April 21, 1880, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Wednesday, Apr 21, 1880 Mr. Bachelder called. I tried to paint a small picture but with no success and worked on my larger one. Dined at Eastmans with his sister Hattie and we all went to see Booth as Macbeth. Eastman and I went to his room. Mrs. Booth and her mother were there and Mrs. Booth looked very ill. Her mother told Eastman she thought her in a very critical condition. A nice long letter from Weir. There was a terrible disaster this evening at the Madison Square Garden where the Halmermann Fair is in progress. The wall fell killing three people and wounding others and destroying many of the pictures in the Art Gallery. We heard of it from Mrs. Booth to whom Dr. Doremus had sent a note.
